For almost twenty years, German Sports Youth, in collaboration with its member organisations, has offered voluntary service in sport: an educational and orientation year with the goal of preparing young people to make a voluntary social commitment and assume responsibility. The voluntary service provides valuable insights into an occupation. In the course of their orientation year, the volunteers experience “self-efficacy” – the conviction that they are able to successfully overcome even difficult situations and challenges by their own efforts.
The Voluntary Social Year (FSJ) is a programme for young people up to the age of 26 who want to put themselves to the test in sports-related youth work. The Federal Volunteer Service (BFD) is also open to older people and also offers assignments in sports associations. The place of assignment generally decides what form of service it offers. There are hardly any differences for the volunteers themselves.
Possible places of assignment in the area of sport include clubs, associations and sports facilities that regularly organise games, sports and leisure activities for children and teenagers and provide other care services for this target group. The places of assignment also include sports associations, schools and childcare centres.
